German glider pilot survives woodland crash

A German glider pilot miraculously survived unscathed when his plane crashed into woodland on Monday afternoon near Lezyca, western Poland. Photo: PAP/Lech Muszynski The 26-year pilot was part of a group of German air enthusiasts who had undergone instruction at an air club in Przylep, near Zielona Gora. The pilot lost control of the glider during a downpour while flying over woodland, and apparently clipped part of a tree, sending the vehicle plunging into the canopy below. Police spokesperson Malgorzata Barska has confirmed that the 26-year-old was sober. “Fortunately, he was able to climb down to the ground on his own via a ladder,” she told the TVN24 news channel. The Lezyca incident marks the second air crash in three days, following Saturday's fatal accident near Czestochowa in which 11 died during a skydiving expedition.
