Cockpitkap opende tijdens start. Vlieger komt om

Bericht door Jan Ritsma » 15 mei 2017, 07:36

An Iowa man was pronounced dead at the scene of a glider crash Saturday at the Blair Airport, according to the president of the Omaha Soaring Club.

Bob Craig, the club’s president, said Sunday that man who died was a 59-year-old club member from Glenwood. The man was the lone occupant when the glider crashed about 3:30 p.m., he said.

Craig said he was not present at the time of the crash, but was told by other club members that the canopy on the glider appeared to come loose during takeoff. The glider pilot grabbed for the canopy.

“In the process of the gentleman reaching for the canopy, he lost control of the plane and crashed,” according to accounts provide to Craig.

Blair police did not return calls. The name of the deceased was being withheld pending notification of family.

Craig said that representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

According to the Washington County Pilot-Tribune & Enterprise newspaper, an autopsy was ordered by the Washington County Attorney.
