Ernstig ongeval Glasflugel 304 met gebroken hoogteroerstang

Bericht door Jan Ritsma » 25 sep 2021, 10:17

On July 30, 2021, about 1440 central daylight time, a HpH, Spol. S.R.O Glasflügel 304S experimental glider, N304AB, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Briggs, Texas. The pilot was seriously injured. The glider was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

According to the aerotow pilot, shortly after takeoff and while the tow plane was about 300 ft above the runway, the glider unexpectedly released from the tow rope. The glider then entered a left turn and landed in what appeared to be a wings level attitude. The tail boom and empennage separated during the landing. The tow rope appeared to be undamaged.

An examination of the glider revealed that the vertical elevator control rod, part no. 304S-46-12, had fractured about 0.75 inch above the lower clevis and a portion of the fractured control rod contained corrosion deposits. Additionally, the upper portion of the vertical elevator control rod exhibited a significant hole due to corrosion. The vertical elevator control rod was extracted from the vertical stabilizer and sent to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Materials Laboratory for further examination.

According to the maintenance logbook, on July 6, 2021, the glider was inspected and found to be in an airworthy condition. The aviation mechanic with inspector authorization noted in the corresponding logbook entry that he had “checked controls” and that the condition inspection had been completed in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations Part 43, Appendix D.
