The Fourth of July, 1970, carried an extra punch for Marfa. The Fourth was the final day of the 12th World Soaring Championships, 14 days of sailplane competitions among pilots from 25 countries, and a thousand people from all over the world had gathered in Marfa to watch them. The championship meet was held in Marfa because of something called the Marfa Dry Line, a meteorological phenomenon involving the collision of moist air from the Gulf of Mexico with dry air from the Western deserts. The collision produces thermal columns of rising air that have made Marfa a paradise for sailplane enthusiasts because sailplane pilots use those thermal columns to gain altitude and distance for their motorless gliders.
