Good evening from Uvalde's WGC Day 12!

It has been a long day here, as many of you can already imagine from reading the rest of the news. PC (Austrian team) and FB (French team) had a mid-air collision around 3 PM today. FB made a safe landing back at Uvalde airport and PC bailed out of his glider and rode his parachute safe to the ground. He was then picked up by a helicopter, brought to Uvalde airport and then went to the local hospital for a precautionary check. I just want to reassure you the pilots involved in the incident today are doing fine, none of them was hurt. This was confirmed by the Austrian team captain after keeping in touch with PC's family.

As the day run by us, I would just like to admire the professional and safe behavior of all the people involved in administrating this "event", everybody knowing their role and importance of their actions. This only shows how great organizers this competition has.

Mid air collision today in the 15 mtr class FB landed back at Uvalde and PC
jumped out and both pilots are ok..
High concentration of gliders in the air, pilots have been flying solid for
2 weeks and are tired, it is a big job
looking out for other gliders all day. We had a safety briefing this
morning about fatigue but is all comes down
to being vigilant and allowing good spacing and distance between gliders.

Er is gelukkig niets ergs gebeurd. Uit Nederlands oogpunt is het een "win, win situatie".
Steven stijgt één plaats in het algemeen klassement en Mark zelfs 2!

Schleicher kan, na wat knip en plakwerk weer een ASG29 aanbieden, in nieuwstaat. Slechts door één privévlieger gevlogen.

(Vlieg)technisch gezien is er geen enkele reden om een negatief gevoel te hebben bij een gerepareerde kist. Zeker als een fabrikant als Schleicher deze zelf verzorgt. "Nieuwstaat" is mogelijk. Zo ingewikkeld zijn die reparaties niet. Er zijn voldoende reparatiebedrijven die ook prima kwaliteit leveren.

Ik denk ook dat het hoofdzakelijk tussen de oren zit. Toch is een dergelijk vliegtuig minder waard dan een nieuwe af fabriek.
Niet omdat er iets aan mankeert, maar omdat als iemand uit twee identieke vliegtuigen kan kiezen altijd de "bruch freie" zal nemen.
Vraag en aanbod bepalen de prijs.

Good morning again with news from the last WGC 2012 pilots' meeting!

The focus today was on safety and on relating yesterday's accident. As I already posted last night, yesterday afternoon we had a mid-air collision between 2 gliders: FB - Louis Bouderlique from France and PC - Peter Hartmann from Austria, both flying ASG-29 in 15 m class. Peter bailed out off his glider and rode his parachute safe to the ground while Louis was able to fly safe back to Uvalde escorted by 2 German pilots, Susanne Schoedel (SE) and David Bauder (EI). He called his team captain immediately after getting safe to the ground describing what happened and saying that he was okay. It was a big relief to everyone to learn that we were dealing only with the need to retrieve a pilot from a remote area, and not with an emergency. Susanne and David, that witnessed the accident, reported to the airport the location of the Austrian pilot and glider and also flew together with Louis back. They proved to be extraordinary colleagues giving up flying the competition for helping a fellow pilot and reporting to the HQ. Everybody today admired their behaviour in an emergency situation.

Miss Daisy - Words About the Worlds

Our Chief Tow Pilot David Larson was the first one to fly out and look for Peter in the area indicated by the German pilots. He managed to find him shortly and give exact direction to the helicopter that was on the way to pick him up and bring him to the airport. As soon as he arrived here, he was given a medical exam by our designated doctor and sent to the hospital for a precautionary check. Special thanks go to Marc Huffstutler for providing the helicopter for this operation and to Dr. Falbaum for taking care of Peter here.

This morning at the pilots' meeting both Peter (right) and Louis (left) were present and smiling, as you can see in the pictures attached. At the end of the meeting all pilots went to shake their hands and tell them how happy we all are to have them back safe.

As Chief Stewart Dick Bradley said earlier today, there is a thin line between and incident and an accident, so all pilots were asked to fly safe today so we could all end a successful competition.

Now off for the runway for a one day line marshall job, more news later.
